Field (James and Annie) House is built.
1856
Built by John Hoppin, it is located at today’s 148 Charles Street. James and Annie Fields subsequently establish a literary salon here, that Edwin Mead later describes as, “For a generation the most interesting home in Boston, the center of more good society, good conversation and fine aspiration than any other.” The building is subsequently demolished. A garage is built on most of the site in 1923,* but a portion of home’s rear garden remains.
